Encourage and Motivate Your Staff by Cristina Sinclaire

Anyone who knows what campaign life is like knows that it’s impossible to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for months on end, without losing steam.
When there is a clear deadline and a goal to accomplish (winning!), it can be easy to lose sight of yourself, and in turn, your staff. So how do you get to the finish line without losing your best people to burn-out, fatigue, or exhaustion?

Create a supportive culture in your office that provides the encouragement and motivation to push through the long hours, and you’ll get to Election Day with a happy and healthy staff. Check out these ideas:

  • Schedule activities. Every week or two, invite your staff out for some down time to bond and get to know each other outside the office. Yes, you’ll probably end up talking about polling numbers or that crazy volunteer, but it’s good to get out of the office and get together for team building and stress relief.
  • Make sure you have regular check-ins with each member of your team. This allows time for troubleshooting issues, acknowledging successes, and ensuring individual accountability. As a bonus, your staff won’t come to you every time they have a question because they can keep a list until your 1:1.
  • Just listen. Offering a sympathetic ear goes a long way. Sometimes we just need to vent our frustrations so we can move on. Giving your staff the space to release that irritation enables them to focus on solutions.
  • Celebrate good work. Don’t just point out where your team needs to do better. Make sure to acknowledge when they have done something well.
  • Encourage friendly competition. We’re all in it to win it, right? Holding friendly contests among staff for best performance is a great motivator to build up your numbers. Examples are volunteer recruitment or fundraising — you can do most money raised or highest number of donors. It’s a great method to keep your staff motivated through long days.
